Literature Text

Outer shell so rough
years of abuse and neglect
pitted and scarred
dirty and torn
scorched by the sun
soaked by the rain
blistered, battered, drenched and broken
cut so deeply a thousand times
capaciousness in vain.

Layer after layer
peeled away
the signature of time
on the soul
like the rings of a tree
dig deeper to the core.

Venture farther to find
an inner sanctum glow
nestled snugly in the depth
far from the reach of
wanton regret
the darkest chamber at the end
of the journey
long and cold.

There inside,
lies the child.
